Q. Can you give me some examples of how my donation would be used?

A. Last year, funds were used in the following ways:

  • 100 area women, victims of domestic abuse, received shelter, counseling and support from agencies supported by Millburn Short Hills United Way, including The Rachel Coalition.
  • The Mental Health Association of Essex County runs a support group for Millburn Short Hills families who care for a loved one with mental illness. They also provide depression screenings around holiday time at the Millburn Public Library. United Way funds these programs.
  • There are 2500 residents age 65 and older in our community. Sage Eldercare, a United Way funded agency, seeks to support many of these individuals through its Eldercare Planning and Guidance Program.

    Q. How much of the United Way of Millburn Short Hills funds are actually distributed in Millburn Short Hills?

A. Of the total funds, 24% is distributed to Millburn based agencies, 44% is distributed to agencies serving Millburn, and 52% is distributed to agencies serving the broader community.

Q. Can I contribute at work?

A. Yes! If you participate in a United Way campaign through payroll deduction, you can give directly to us by designating the United Way of Millburn Short Hills

Q. Can you give me some examples of needs that were identified and addressed by the United Way of Millburn-Short Hills?

A. the United Way of Millburn Short Hills has responded to identified needs in the community with the establishment of the MTAP Program. MTAP, Medical Transportation Access Program, provides door-to-door medical transportation to individuals in need. The United Way is also the sole source of financial support for SNEAKERS, the special needs recreation program run by the Millburn Recreation Department. Special needs students who are Millburn residents enjoy outings, recreation and fellowship after school throughout the year on a monthly basis.

Q. What is your relationship with the United Way of America and how much does it cost?

A. United Way of America is an independent and separate organization. They do not do any fundraising. They do provide local United Ways with publicity, research, the use of their logo, and access to any information the local United Way may need. In return, each local United Way pays dues. United Ways are independent operations that set their own policies and handle their own finances. The United Way of America also offers support services like advertising and marketing but not policy direction.

A. Yes, we only disclose information with permission of the donor or as required by law.
